I Thought Finding Someone Open-Minded Was Enough
It wasn’t.
The first thing I looked for was always the same.
“Are they open-minded?”
If the answer was yes, I relaxed.
I assumed everything else would work itself out.
We’d figure out communication.
We’d figure out boundaries.
We’d figure out what kind of relationship we wanted.
Being open-minded felt like the hardest part.
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
One evening, I was sitting on a couch with someone I’d been seeing for a few months.
We weren’t arguing.
Nothing dramatic had happened.
We were simply talking about the future.
I remember asking,
“Where do you see yourself a year from now?”
They answered without hesitation.
“I’d love for us to spend most weekends together.”
It sounded sweet.
But my stomach sank.
Because the picture in my head looked completely different.
I loved having time together.
I also loved having time apart.
Neither of us had done anything wrong.
Neither of us had lied.
We had simply imagined two different relationships.
That night taught me something I still think about.
People spend a lot of time asking,
“Are you monogamous?”
“Are you poly?”
“Are you open to ENM?”
They’re reasonable questions.
But they aren’t the questions that decide whether two people can build a life together.
The harder questions usually come later.
How do you handle disappointment?
What makes you feel secure?
How much alone time do you need before you start feeling like yourself again?
When you’re hurt, do you talk immediately—or do you need space first?
Nobody asks those questions on a first date.
Maybe we should.
I’ve met people in traditional relationships who understood each other beautifully.
I’ve also met people in poly relationships who never seemed to hear each other at all.
The relationship style wasn’t what made the difference.
The way they showed up for each other did.
These days, I don’t get excited just because someone says they’re open-minded.
I get curious when someone says,
“Tell me what makes you feel comfortable.”
Or,
“What does a good relationship look like to you?”
Those conversations tell me far more than any label ever could.
Maybe that’s what compatibility really is.
Not finding someone who wants the same relationship structure.
Finding someone who understands the kind of life you’re both trying to build.
Because labels can describe a relationship.
They can’t carry one.
Relationships Beyond Labels.
About BeyondMono
BeyondMono is a community exploring relationships beyond labels—whether that’s monogamy, polyamory, open relationships, or something in between.
We believe the strongest relationships aren’t defined by a label, but by honesty, curiosity, and the willingness to grow together.
